Flower Fail: What is Budblasting?

What happened to my baby plant with a babier peduncle? It bud blasted.

If you’ve grown flowering plants for any length of time, you’ve probably experienced this too.

Bud blasting is when any flowering plant, including: hoyas, orchids, roses, peonies or any flowering plant has flower buds that never fully bloom.

Common bud blasting triggers are:

  • Inconsistent watering

  • Moving the pot

  • Temperature swings and drafts

  • Nutrient deficiencies

In the case of my hoya I think it’s just a little too young to take on the energy that is needed for flowering or because I moved the pot a single foot away from its home to film the time-lapse.

I’m not worried about this little one - it will bloom again! Hoyas can produce new flower buds from the same peduncle or they’ll form a new one once the plant is mature enough.
